My current research concentrates on what we can learn about evolution from the Framingham Heart Study population. We have shown that this contemporary population experiences natural selection that should shape lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure, earlier age at first birth, and shorter stature in women, and that because of genetic correlations between the sexes, and differing selection pressures in each sex, that selection in one sex is being constrained by selection on the other sex. We have also recently demonstrated both phenotypic and genetic costs of reproduction and have located some of the genes that influence the negative relationship between reproductive success and lifespan.
